How to Prepare for Your Tutoring Sessions

After every tutoring session, you want to leave feeling like you are getting your money's worth and like it is making a difference in your (or your child's) academics and we want that for you as well! The best way to make sure that every tutoring session is successful, is for every party that is involved to be well-prepared.

Here are some ways that you can be prepared for your sessions:

Being on Time:

You know that uneasy feeling you get when you are rushing out of the house, speeding to get to your destination on time and then arriving late in a panic? That is not the feeling we want our students to have coming into our tutoring sessions. Students should feel comfortable and excited to learn and start their tutoring sessions. Being on time, or even early, gets rid of that panic feeling and allows you to settle and have some time to sit calmly to gather yourself before you begin.

Ask Questions:

We want to make sure we are helping you and your child as best as we can, in every area that they may need support in. If your children are having difficulty with certain topics, subject areas, or assignments in school, have a list on hand so that we can take a look and know how to best support them in our future sessions. We know parents also have a lot of questions and things they wonder about, in regards to their children's academic success. Write down some questions you may have for us that could better help you and we will be happy to answer them as best as we can.

Materials:

Our tutors have all the materials you will need to complete every session, however if there is a comfort item or specific tool that you know really helps your child then feel free to bring that to your sessions as well. As for homework sessions, have your homework prepared and ready to get started before your session so that no time is wasted flipping through pages and finding loose items. We want to make sure we are using every minute of our sessions tackling our assignments and making good use of our time together!

Have a Plan:

Our first sessions are always an assessment session to figure out where your child is at and what we should be focusing on for our future sessions. This is where we will discuss our plan moving forward to keep sessions organized and on topic. However, be mindful that we need to be flexible and plans can be altered if progress is made more quickly than we expected or if we hit some bumps in the road and need to reassess. Having a plan and following the plan to the best of our ability is probably the best way for all of us to be prepared for our tutoring sessions.

The Right Mindset:

The last tip for a well-prepared tutoring session, is arriving with the right mindset to learn and grow! This means coming with a positive attitude, hard work ethic and ready to push yourself. We want our students to have a growth mindset, which means they challenge themselves, persist past setbacks, learn from criticism and failures and understand that the sky is the limit when it comes to how much they can learn and achieve. Having the right mindset sets the foundation for a successful tutoring sessions to take part!

The first tutoring session may produce some nervous and uneasy emotions, as you do know what to expect.
